All the Basics for Your Work at Home Equipment

When setting up your work at home office, you will need to evaluate the best equipment to get started.  It’s important to note that many companies that offer work at home opportunities will have specific requirements for the type of equipment you will need. It is important to make sure you have all the up to date software and programs to run your business. Virtual call center home based positions may have different requirements than a traditional in office job. We have compiled some information to consider when choosing the right equipment. Most of these things may sound straight-forward; however many at home workers don’t always realize that there are a lot of small details to take into consideration.

Your primary tool when you work at home is generally your personal computer. Some companies require you to have a desktop PC rather than a laptop PC or Apple computer. The technical specifications of the computer that employers are looking for also matter just as much. While requirements can vary somewhat, most employers are looking for their remote employees to have the following: 1Ghz-2Ghz processor, 512MB-1GB of RAM, sound card/speakers, 15-17” monitor, and virus and spyware protection and a working firewall. These companies may also be looking for their employees to have broadband internet connection.  Sometimes a land line phone service other than cell, VOIP, and cable phones is also required. 

More than likely, your work at home role will require you to have a headset with a microphone to connect to your computer. We recommend noise cancelling devices, which can help eliminate any background noise and keep your conversations free of distractions. Although wireless or Bluetooth technology may seem like the more comfortable option to use, be aware that some companies may require a corded headset so you can plug it directly in to your computer. Webcams can also be an important part of staying connected, and can be used for video conferencing.  Again, always check with the company you will be working with to be sure your equipment is compatible with their software and specifications.
